TORONTO– Liberal Status of Women critic Judy Sgro made the following statement today on the anniversary of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada:

“Today we mark 46 years since Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson demonstrated great leadership by establishing the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. The work of this committee, and its recommendations, have stimulated public consciousness and helped to spur real progress in the fight for equality of opportunity.

As we look back on the progress made for women in Canada, there are many achievements of which we can be immensely proud, but there is still more to be done. On this important milestone, the Liberal Party recommits to ensuring women’s voices, opportunities and rights in Canada continue to grow.”

Chair of the Liberal Women’s Caucus, Dr. Carolyn Bennett, continued:

“Many of the priorities highlighted in this landmark report – from family planning to employment benefits and pensions to early learning and childcare – have been undermined by the Harper Conservatives. From their backdoor attempts to reopen the abortion debate to cancelling universal childcare and defunding women’s groups, this government continues to attempt to dismantle gender equality in Canada. While the Conservatives try to sweep the many issues raised by the Royal Commission under the rug, Liberals will continue to be vocal advocates of equal rights for women and girls.”
